weight liftingSince I lost a bunch of weight, I wanted to turn my focus from weight loss to strength building. I read the Body for Life book at the recommendation of a friend, and decided to do it. The exercise portion requires that you lift weights 3 days a week, do some cardio activity 3 days a week, then take one day off. The weight lifting workouts are designed to take about 45 minutes, and the cardio is supposed to be limited to 20 minutes. With as busy as Missy and I are, the minimal time commitment (compared to 2-3 workouts a day to win the weight loss competition) is very attractive, although I’m still working on getting the weight lifting workouts below 1 hr as I learn my way around the equipment and my own limitations. I am allowing myself one deviation from the program: since I’m training to run the Nashville 10k in a few weeks, 20 minutes of cardio 3 times a week has been replaced with my running training schedule, which also happens to call for 3 runs a week (plus stretching, strength training, and general cross training). This weekend I picked up a weight bench, barbells, and a slew of weights from a guy on craigslist for cheap:
There’s something raw and gritty about going out to my 85 degree garage and throwing weights around, it’s very motivating for me. So far so good! For some reason, I just know you are going to be one of the few that stick with this.
